This morning on the way to my biweekly brow appointment, I tuned in to a podcast featuring Marci Shimoff, a woman who describes herself as being "born depressed... with existential angst". Despite this, she successfully transformed her life, embracing what she terms "happy for no reason". Marci accomplished this great feat by interviewing happy individuals and developing a metaphor for building your inner home for happiness, a philosophy which she personally embraced, and which is outlined below.
Building your inner home for happiness
The foundation:
The foundation of happiness is described as taking responsibility for your own life and happiness and not portraying yourself as a victim. Marci says that blaming others, complaining about your life, and feeling shame, are all ways of being the victim and that when we're in this victim mentality, we cannot be happy.
The four pillars; the mind, the heart, the body, and the soul:
The mind encompasses all your thoughts; do you have thoughts which support and promote happiness, or do you have thoughts which rob you of your happiness? Essentially, do you have neural pathways and thought patterns which support happiness?
The heart encompasses good values; do you have an open heart? Are you compassionate? Do you practice gratitude? Do you have loving kindness? Do you forgive easily?
The body encompasses the biochemistry of happiness; does your body have enough serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins?
The soul encompasses a connection to a greater energy of life, whether it be God, spirit, nature or the universe.
The roof:
The roof of happiness is described as your purpose in life. Are you living an inspired life? Are you fulfilling your purpose? Do you wake up each day excited and loving your life?
The garden:
The garden of happiness is described as the people you surround yourself with. Are you surrounded by toxic, energy-draining people, or people who are a joy to be around? Do you have poison or roses in your garden?
So, there you have it, Marci Shimoff's 7 steps to becoming Happy for No Reason! And if you're wondering which podcast I found this little gem on, it was the podcast Manifest by Sarah Prout, episode 25 (website linked below!), which I have been thoroughly enjoying! Marci also offers a complimentary e-Book which can be found on her website, Happiness for No Reason (link below!).
So, what do you think of Marci's 7 steps? I'd love to hear your thoughts below!
Always appreciate you!
